Mnemonics – Brief Introduction

A mnemonic is a technique used to remember lists, rules, and procedures.  It is a word or phrase, which helps remember given information.  Mnemonics are useful to recollect the disjoint and non-related list of items/issues/topics in a particular order.  It is important to note that you should always use Mnemonics with caution since they have little or no relationship with the information to be recollected.

For example, you have to remember the colors of rainbow namely Red, Orange, Violet, Green, Yellow, Indigo, Blue.  It is very difficult to remember all the six colors, as they are not related to each other.  Hence, to remember them use a short word ‘VIBGYR’ where V, I, B, G, Y and R stand for   Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red respectively.

Here, take the first letter of each item to be remembered and create one word that contains all the first letters of each of the words.  Or else, take the first letter of each word and create a phrase or sentence containing the first letters of each word.  For example: All Silver Tea Cups.

You can create your own mnemonic techniques, such as relating the topics to your personal experiences or self designed symbols, in order to remember the things that you want to remember.
