Introduction to e-book, online book & digital edition

Nowadays, most of the content writers, working in IT firms, are made to prepare content for various e-books as they are increasingly gaining popularity among readers.  Hence, as a student of content writing course, you need to know basics of an e-book and how to prepare content for it.

Introduction: An e-book (electronic book) is an electronic file, which contains text and images presented in a form that resembles an offline book and can be read on computers or other digital devices such as electronic readers.  You can read e-books on cell phones of certain companies too.  An e-book can be in various formats such as Ms-Word, Ms-Publisher, Frame-Maker, PDF and Adobe format.

E-books Vs Online books and Digital Editions:  An e-book is different from an online book or a digital edition.  An online book is a book, which can be read only when the reader is online.  Online books usually contain text and images with low or no multimedia features.  Pages of online books are arranged in a sequential order.  An online book makes its presence in a server, which is connected, to Internet.

An e-book needs not to be hosted in any server.  It can be generated on a computer, which needs not to be connected to Internet.  It is not mandatory for a reader to be online to read an e-book though he can download millions of e-books (some are free ones and some priced ones) from Internet.  It can be transferred to others by either sending e-mails or placing it in a Shared Server in an organization or using external devices such as CD-ROMs, DVDs and Pen drives.  Nowadays, you can transfer e-books even through mobile phones.

A digital edition is an online magazine or newspaper whose format is identical to its print version.  Digital editions are also called digital facsimiles.  These editions may also contain some of interactive features such as hyperlinks, searching, and book marking.  They can also incorporate multimedia elements such as video or animation.  Some of the digital editions may contain archives of print newspapers of several decades.
