Mind Mapping: Introduction, applications & guidelines

A mind map is a diagram used to represent concepts, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word.  All the points related to the central keyword directly or indirectly are called elements.  All the elements are classified into branches.  The mind mappings are used in various fields such as education, technical training, engineering, business, and note taking.

(Note: In a mind map, all the elements are connected to the central keyword directly or indirectly.)

Mind Maps are used by Instructional designers for below mentioned purposes:
Ø      To organize and plan information or tasks
Ø      To display framework design of a process/topic
Ø      To make a presentation creative and effective
Ø      To enable viewers to learn more quickly and effectively
Ø      To enable viewers to memorize presented elements (concepts) quickly
Ø      To enable viewers to remember all the elements (concepts) for a longer period of time

Follow below mentioned guidelines for creating Mind Maps:
  1. Start with a topic with effective colors and design
  2. Centralize the topic
  3. Use symbols, codes, text boxes, and auto shapes wherever required
  4. Display more important key words in upper case letter and less important keywords lower case letters
  5. Use thicker lines when you connect elements to central keyword and use thinner lines when you connect one element to other elements
  6. You use different colors throughout the Mind Map for good look and feel and visual stimulation.  You use different colors to enable the viewers to distinguish between different groups of elements.
