SEO Writing: Introduction and Guidelines

The origin of SEO Copy Writing can be traced back to mid 2000’s by when SEO has become a popular profession in IT industry and several SEO standards, customs, and practices are well defined and well established. Keyword research too emerged as a subject with the growing popularity of SEOs and SEO Copy Writers.

SEO writers are those who prepare content for increasing the search engine rank of the site they are working for and usually, they prepare content according to instructions given by SEO’s.

The work of SEO writer commences only after the completion of keyword research. They prepare content on the target keyword, maintaining the specified keyword density. However, their work is not confined to merely working on the keywords. Though keywords are highly important, the SEO writers must bear in mind that search engines consider even the reputation and credibility of a site and the quality and relevance of the content while assigning search engine rankings. SEO copywriting is not just about search engine rankings but also about the presentation of the content to and by a search engines.

Some of Guidelines for effective SEO Writing are given below:

Title: Look that your target keyword appears in the title. If the title begins with the keyword, it is much better.  But, the insertion of the keyword should not kill the readability and catchiness of the title. It makes the search engines recognize that your page is about a particular subject. The title should not be too long in order to make the full title visible in a search result.

Meta Description: Try to insert the target keywords in your Meta description, which influences your search engine rank. Keep meta description less than 150 words so that full description is visible in the search result.

Content: Look that your content is unique and original and website is frequently updated. Your content should not be too brief and look that your posting must contain at least 300 words.

Keyword Frequency and Density:  Develop the content based on the target keyword and maintain specified keyword density. However, do not overuse the keywords as it may result in the spamming of the content. Search Engines may ban your site or webpage if it is marked with the overuse of target keywords.

Overuse of the keywords should not kill the readability of your webpage or else, it discourages your readers from reading your webpage entirely. It reduces the average time spent by visitors on your site, which is one of the important factors taken into account by search engines while determining the credibility of the website. If your content is featured by overuse of keywords and non-readability, your visitors get discouraged to visit your site again in future.

Maintain specified Keyword Frequency and Keyword Density. Keyword density does not determine the search engine rank but, it is still an important metric because if density of any keyword exceeds specific measure (usually 5.5%), it may be considered SPAM or deliberate keyword stuffing and search engines may block your webpage or website.
(Note: Keyword refers to the number of times a keyword appears on a webpage while keyword density refers to the percentage of the keyword occurrence in comparison to total number of words on the page.)
