Free Writing – Introduction

Free writing is a writing technique in which a person writes continuously on given topic for a set period with no concern about accuracy, spelling and grammar mistakes, punctuation and alignment issues. In free writing, one writes sentences whatever comes to mind.

Free Writing – Self-exercise:

Set a time limit for five or ten minutes.
Look at the given/self-assigned topic and think about it for a while.
        Now, start writing or typing.
        Let your thoughts flow freely.
        Do not stop anywhere.
Do not bother much about grammar and spellings.
Do not proof read, review and edit.
Keep on writing or typing until your time completes.
When time is up, you stop writing and look at your writing

Now you are done with your free writing exercise.

In general, free writing produces raw and less unusable content.  Free writing is performed usually with in time bounds.  Some psychologists use it as a prescription for those who suffer from writing phobia. The process reveals all the pre-conceived ideas and notions of the author.

Different from brainstorming: Free writing is different from brain storming where the writers simply list out the ideas and important phrases but never make a complete sentence or a paragraph.  Free writing produces raw content while brainstorming produces an unordered, unedited, and raw list of concepts and phrases.

Different from Pre Writing: Free writing is different from prewriting where the writers simply list out the topics based on which they are going to develop the content.
